The Deanna School of Dancing (DSD) was established in 1980 by Deanna Jayasuriya. She built her own dance school consisting of two studios on par with international standards, with its sprung floors, barres and mirrors. It is a well established and unique school of education and training in ballet, contemporary dance and choreography.
We offer a safe, friendly and nurturing environment where students enjoy the highest quality training delivered by passionate and skilled dance teachers. The forte of the school is that all teachers who are employed have been students from a young age who later qualified as Royal Academy of Dance (RAD UK) teachers.
The main objective of the school is to prepare students for a career in professional dancing. Our vision is to uphold international standards in dancing and encourage students to acquire a special and highly valued approach to this art. The school has a unique atmosphere that fosters the development of a strong personal identity through learning, self-reflection, research and creative discovery.
The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is the world’s largest dance examining body. The RAD was founded in 1920 with the aim of setting standards for teaching dance around the UK.
Today, the institute has a presence in 85 countries around the world with 36 offices and has over 14,000 worldwide members.
The Deanna School of Dancing has been affiliated with the RAD since 1983 and has had a 100% pass rate since then.
Students in these levels have classes that incorporate different themes which encourages maximum class participation. The curriculum is created to encourage age appropriate and fun physical movement, creativity, musicality and expressions with a gradual understanding of the disciplines of ballet. Students at this level will build on focus and confidence which will prepare them for entry to Pre-Primary.
The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is one of the world’s most influential dance education organisations.
These classes provide an introduction to basic ballet, body anatomy and stage terminology while developing students’ physical skills, stamina, creativity, expression and musicality using a range of sounds and musical styles.
Deanna School of Dancing offers (optional) RAD classical ballet examinations for boys and girls.
At age 5, students will be introduced to the RAD (UK) syllabus and will participate in the Pre-Primary examination at the age of 6.
The Pre-Primary and Primary ballet class syllabus will focus on developing self-confidence and responsibility as well as developing musical awareness.
The graded syllabus at these levels provide a broad practical dance education with extensive work on performance skills for the students.
It mainly focuses on pursuing the art of ballet, free movement and character styles. Upon the foundations nurtured in Pre-Primary and Primary in dance, grades 1 – 7 will be providing students with a sequential syllabus that will promote appropriate progressions.
Elegance, grace with strength, flexibility, expression and artistry are taught and students will learn the disciplines of classical, free-movement and character.
The RAD vocational graded level provides students an in-depth study of developing technique, music and performance skills. Pointe work is introduced at this level.
This highly focused and practical training prepares students for a dance career.
Students pursuing graded and vocational graded examinations will be allocated UCAS tariff points which can be used when applying for higher education.

Some of our senior students were given a great opportunity to be a part of an exciting workshop conducted by guest artistes from Australia, France, Singapore and our very own artistes from Sri Lanka.
Students had the opportunity to take part, speak and discuss various topics such as stressors being a dancer, storytelling with the use of body, progressive ballet technique, barre work, stage makeup, yoga, meditation, nutrition, contemporary and compiling a production with the artistes.
